Hi, I’m Rena Hoberman
I’m a surface pattern designer based in New Jersey.
When designing, I combine digital drawing tools like Adobe Fresco along with traditional supplies like pencil, ink, and watercolors. My work is mostly inspired by nature, with some geometrics and abstract designs thrown in. I love including soft color palettes, organic shapes, and a hint of texture.
Growing up, I was a child who loved fresh crayons, stringing bead bracelets, and trips to Michaels. As a young teen, a drew often, but I thought of it as a hobby. I never thought I could be an artist or illustrator as a profession.
I started my career in graphic design, creating flyers, brochures, and the like for clients. I found myself searching for the next step, something that would enable me to put my own expression into my designs. At the end of 2018, I decided to see what would happen if I spent a few minutes a day working on my drawing skills. I bought a sketchbook and took out pencils that I hadn’t used in years. I drew flowers, lots of them. I tried new mediums. I took online classes on illustration, mostly on a website called Skillshare.com. On Skillshare, I stumbled across a class on surface pattern design. I had no clue what that was. I remember thinking, That sounds hard.
It took me a while until I decided to try my hand and design a pattern collection, but once I started, all I wanted to do was design patterns all day. Now you can find my patterns on fabric, wallpaper, and home décor in my Spoonflower shop.
When I’m not drawing flowers, I enjoy nature walks, creative writing, reading, and drinking warm cozy drinks.
